Lauterbrunnen in November: What's Open, What Isn't

I guide in this valley in summer and in winter, and in November I run no tours at all. That tells you most of what you need to know about Lauterbrunnen in November, but not all of it, because the forums get one big thing wrong.

The usual line is that everything shuts. It does not. The trains still run every half hour, the cableway from Stechelberg still carries you up to Mürren, and the Staubbach still falls behind the church. What closes is the list most people come for: the Trümmelbach, the Staubbach gallery, the Männlichen lift and, for twelve days, the Grütschalp cable car.

I checked every date against the operators' own pages and the Swiss timetable for November 2026, and I pulled ten years of snow records from the MeteoSwiss station in the village. Below you will find what is shut, what still runs, the month I would pick instead, and a November day that still works.

Is Lauterbrunnen worth visiting in November?

For a day, yes, if you know what is closed before you arrive. For a trip planned around the valley, no. November is the quietest month of the year here and almost nothing is open, so you trade the Trümmelbach, the Männlichen and most restaurants for trains, Mürren, the Staubbach and an empty valley.

That is not a trick to push you to another month. November is the month the valley is truly empty, and it is the month when almost nothing stays open.

The travellers on TripAdvisor and Rick Steves say the same in their own words: lifts closed, hotels shut, restaurants dark, and a valley that stays gloomy under its cliffs. They are right about the mood. They are wrong when they say there is nothing to do, and the next two sections show why.

What is closed in Lauterbrunnen in November 2026?

Four things close: the Trümmelbach Falls from early November, the Staubbach gallery after October, the Männlichen gondola from Wengen from 26 October to 11 December 2026, and the Allmendhubel funicular above Mürren from 19 October to 11 December 2026. The Grütschalp cable car also stops from 26 October to 6 November 2026.

The Trümmelbach is the one that catches people out. The operator opens it "from early April to early November" depending on the weather, and it does not publish the closing day in advance. From September to November it opens from 09:00 to 17:00 on the days it is open. The Trümmelbach Falls website asks you to check the exact hours at the start and end of the season.

Insider tip: the classic November mistake is counting on the Trümmelbach. If it is the reason for your trip, come before November, or call the falls before you board the train.

The Staubbach gallery, the path that takes you behind the falls, is open from May to October. The Männlichen gondola from Wengen has no service on the official timetable from 26 October to 11 December 2026, so you cannot start the Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk from Wengen. The Allmendhubel funicular above Mürren is closed from 19 October to 11 December 2026.

Grütschalp is the short one. The Grütschalp cable car from Lauterbrunnen has no service from 26 October to 6 November 2026 and runs again from 7 November. During that gap, the way up to Mürren is the other one, from Stechelberg.

What still runs in November?

More than the forums suggest. Trains from Interlaken Ost reach Lauterbrunnen in 22 minutes, twice an hour. The train up to Wengen runs every half hour. The Stechelberg to Mürren cableway runs through November after its maintenance from 19 to 30 October. The Coop by the station was open 08:00 to 19:00 every day in late September.

I checked two dates on the official Swiss timetable, Tuesday 3 November and Tuesday 17 November 2026. On 3 November, with the Grütschalp cable car stopped, the fastest way from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren is the 141 bus to Stechelberg and the cableway up: the 10:05 bus arrives in Mürren at 10:40, 35 minutes in all. On 17 November, with Grütschalp running again, the same trip takes 21 minutes.

The Staubbach does not close either. The falls are a natural waterfall behind the church, and the Jungfrau Railways page on the Staubbach says you can see them all year round, often frozen in winter. What closes is only the gallery behind the water.

Late October or November: which should you pick?

Late October, and it is not close. The forests are in autumn colour, it is milder and there is more sun. At the Interlaken weather station, October averaged 10.4 °C and about 107 hours of sunshine over the last ten years, against 4.8 °C and about 67 hours in November. You just have to plan around two lift closures.

Late October vs November: my verdict. Late October wins on light, colour and warmth. November wins on one thing only, the silence, and it pays for it with the closures above. If your dates are fixed in November, come for a day from Interlaken. If your dates are free, come in the second half of October.

Late October has two traps of its own, and both are on the Mürren side. The Stechelberg cableway is in maintenance from 19 to 30 October 2026 and runs a replacement bus. The Grütschalp cable car stops from 26 October. Between 26 and 30 October 2026 both routes are affected at once, so check the timetable for your day before you plan Mürren.

The Trümmelbach, on the other hand, is still open in late October if the weather allows. That alone is a reason to come before November.

Does it snow in Lauterbrunnen in November?

Sometimes, and sometimes it stays. MeteoSwiss measures the snow every day at its station in Lauterbrunnen. In the last ten Novembers, from 2016 to 2025, the ground was white on 0 to 13 days. In three of those ten Novembers there was no snow cover at all. November 2025 had 11 days, with up to 20 cm.

The records back that up. November 2017 had 13 days with snow on the ground, and 2018, 2020 and 2022 had none. November 2024 had 5 days, with up to 15 cm. There is no pattern you can plan on, so do not book November for a snowy valley.

Fun fact: the MeteoSwiss station at Lauterbrunnen is a manual one. Someone records the rain, the fresh snow and the total snow depth every day, and the records are open to anyone.

What the valley feels like when the season stops

Quiet and dim. The crowds are gone, many hotels and restaurants are shut, and the people who work the summer season are away. The Staubbach is down to a thin thread of water with ice on the rock. For some visitors that emptiness is the whole point, and for others it is simply a closed valley.

The Staubbach is the best example of what changes. By late autumn there is little left of it.

The locals see November in two ways, and I find both true. For seasonal workers it is their holiday, because it is the month with the fewest tourists. For locals who do not work in tourism, it is the best time of the year, because it is so calm.

The light is the other half. I have been in the valley after 17:00 in winter: dark and cold, but with light on the Staubbach. The village gets very little direct sun in the darker months, and I explain what that means for where you sleep in Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken as a base.

A November day in Lauterbrunnen that works

Base yourself in Interlaken and come for the day. Take the train to Lauterbrunnen, walk to the Staubbach, then go up to Mürren, by Grütschalp from 7 November or by the 141 bus and the Stechelberg cableway before that. Come back down, buy lunch at the Coop and catch the train back.

Weather and fitness, in short: the valley floor is flat and the walk to the Staubbach is easy, but November means cold hands and short days. Wear warm layers, waterproof shoes and something with grip in case of ice. The crowds are no issue at all this month, which is the opposite of what I describe in the best time of day in Lauterbrunnen for summer.

Is everything closed in Lauterbrunnen in November?

No. The Trümmelbach, the Staubbach gallery, the Männlichen gondola from Wengen and the Allmendhubel funicular are closed, and many hotels and restaurants take their break. But the trains from Interlaken run every half hour, the train to Wengen runs, the cableway from Stechelberg runs to Mürren, and the Grütschalp cable car runs again from 7 November 2026. The Staubbach itself can be seen all year. The Coop by the station keeps you fed.

Are the Trümmelbach Falls open in November?

Only at the very start of the month, if at all. The operator opens the falls from early April to early November, depending on the weather, and does not announce the last day in advance. On the days it is open in autumn, the hours are 09:00 to 17:00. If the Trümmelbach matters to you, plan your visit for October, and check the falls' own website before you travel.

Can you get to Mürren in November?

Yes. The Stechelberg to Mürren cableway is in maintenance from 19 to 30 October 2026 and runs in November. From 26 October to 6 November 2026 the Grütschalp cable car is stopped, so you take the 141 bus from Lauterbrunnen station to Stechelberg and the cableway up, 35 minutes in all on 3 November. From 7 November the Grütschalp route runs again and takes 21 minutes.

Is November a good time to see snow in Lauterbrunnen?

Not a reliable one. At the MeteoSwiss station in Lauterbrunnen, the ground was white on 0 to 13 days per November between 2016 and 2025, and three of those ten Novembers had no snow cover at all. November 2025 was a snowy one, with 11 days and up to 20 cm. If snow is the reason for your trip, come from mid-December, once the winter lifts and sledding runs are open.

Should you stay overnight in Lauterbrunnen in November?

I would not. The village sits deep between its cliffs and gets very little direct sun in the darker months, it is very cold in winter, and in November there is almost nothing open in the evening. I have slept there myself. Stay in Interlaken, where more stays open, and ride up for the day: the train takes 22 minutes and leaves every half hour. If you want a mountain night, Wengen or Mürren suit it better than the valley floor.

Come in late October, or talk to us about winter

November is the one month I do not guide in this valley. If you can move your dates, the second half of October gives you autumn forests, more sun and the Trümmelbach still open. If you are coming in winter, the valley becomes a sledding and snowshoe destination from December.

The main worry with an off-season trip is arriving to find the door shut. The way around it is to build the day around what runs, with someone who checks the timetable for your date.
