Iseltwald Crash Landing on You Pier: What CHF 5 Buys

A village of 406 people made close to CHF 300,000 in one year from a turnstile and a public toilet.

That is the real story of Iseltwald, and it is more interesting than the drama that caused it. In 2024 the municipality took around CHF 244,000 from the barrier on its boat pier and another CHF 58,000 from the paid toilets nearby. For 2023, its first year, it had budgeted CHF 100,000. The barrier had been standing for less than two years.

The reason is a wooden dock on Lake Brienz where a scene from the Korean series Crash Landing on You was filmed. Since the show aired, around 1,000 people a day, on the municipality's own average, have come to stand on twelve metres of planking and take one photograph.

You probably came here to find out whether it is worth it. The honest answer has three parts: what the CHF 5 gets you, when the pier is genuinely quiet, and the free viewpoint that most visitors walk straight past. I will also tell you what breaks in October.

What is the Iseltwald pier and why is it famous?

It is the working boat landing of a small village on the south shore of Lake Brienz, about 44 minutes by boat from Interlaken. A romantic scene from the Netflix series Crash Landing on You was shot on it, and Korean, Thai and Filipino travellers have arrived in numbers ever since. The village installed a paid turnstile in spring 2023.

Nothing about the structure itself is remarkable. It is a plain wooden jetty with a metal railing, the kind you find at every stop on this lake. What makes it work in photographs is what sits behind it: the water is that flat glacier green, and the mountains close in on both sides.

Travellers describe it in almost the same words every time. One review calls the water "a stunning shade of emerald, and the distant mountains create a dreamy backdrop". Another says "every angle looks like a perfect postcard view". Both are fair.

It is also still a functioning dock. Scheduled BLS boats tie up here five times a day in summer, and the turnstile has to let passengers through.

What does the CHF 5 turnstile at the Iseltwald pier pay for?

CHF 5 per person buys physical access through the barrier and onto the pier itself. The municipality accepts Swiss coins of 5, 2 and 1 franc, or a credit card. The public toilets are a separate barrier at CHF 1, taking half, one and two franc coins or a card. Both figures come from the municipality's own page and were checked on 23 August 2026.

The money is not a souvenir tax, whatever the internet says about it. Iseltwald has 406 residents and was absorbing something close to a thousand daily visitors. The revenue goes into maintaining the pier, cleaning the toilets and dealing with the waste that a thousand people a day leave behind.

Put the numbers next to each other and the scale is obvious:

Do you have to pay to see the pier?

No. This is the single most useful thing to know before you go, and the municipality does not hide it. The pier is fully visible from the shore path beside the barrier and from the side. You pay CHF 5 to stand on the planks, not to look at them.

Visitors work this out and say so plainly. One writes: "You have a good view of the pier from behind the turnstile or from the side, without paying." Another: "You have to pay 5chf I believe? to enter the dock area. Otherwise, the views are just as nice from the side."

So the decision is narrower than it looks. You are not paying for the view of Lake Brienz. You are paying for a photograph with you standing in a specific spot, facing a specific direction, the way the actors did.

If that photograph is the reason you travelled here, five francs is trivial against the cost of getting to Switzerland. If it is not, keep the coins and walk the shore path.

What I would not do is pay, take the photo in ninety seconds because people are waiting behind you, and leave. That is the version of this stop everybody complains about afterwards.

How do you get to Iseltwald from Interlaken?

Two ways, and they suit different days. Bus 103 from Interlaken Ost reaches the stop Iseltwald, Dorfplatz in 15 to 21 minutes with no changes, and tickets start at CHF 3.20. The BLS boat from Interlaken Ost takes about 40 to 45 minutes and ties up at the pier itself.

Checked on the official timetable on 13 September 2026, a weekday morning gives you two buses an hour, at :05 and :35, taking 15 to 21 minutes, and some of them run as the express EXB103.

The boat is the better arrival. You come in across the water and step off directly onto the famous planks, which means you are on the pier as a passenger rather than as a paying photographer. In the 2026 summer timetable, running 23 May to 11 October, boats leave Interlaken Ost at 9.07, 11.07, 12.07, 14.07 and 16.07.

There is one more approach, and it is the best tip in any review I read: "if you get off at a few bus stops earlier like we did, you'll get to enjoy a scenic walk with amazing view of Iseltwald along the way." Getting off early turns a bus stop into a walk along the lake, and it costs nothing.

Can you drive to Iseltwald, and what about coaches?

Driving is possible and parking is very limited. Coaches are a different matter entirely: a coach cannot come to Iseltwald without an advance online reservation, and the municipality states plainly that visiting by coach without one is prohibited. There is no drop-off zone.

The coach rules, from the official pages and checked on 23 August 2026:

• Booking is compulsory, online, at the municipality's reservation portal.

• The fee is CHF 50 per reservation.

• Time slots run 08.00 to 10.00, 10.00 to 12.00, 13.00 to 15.00, 15.00 to 17.00 and, from April to October, 17.00 to 19.00.

• Bus parking operates 08.00 to 17.00, extended to 18.30 in summer.

• Two official pages disagree on the maximum stay: the municipality's own page says two hours, the regional tourism page says 1.5 hours. Book on the assumption of the shorter one.

Then there is the date that will catch people out this autumn. From Monday 5 October to Friday 23 October 2026, resurfacing works at the Dorfplatz turnaround mean no coach parking spaces at all in Iseltwald, and group arrivals and departures are possible only by public bus or boat.

Camping is also now prohibited in the village, with checks, which is a rule that exists because it had to.

When is the Iseltwald pier quiet?

Early morning and late evening, and the difference is dramatic. The coach slots begin at 08.00 and the busiest window sits between roughly 10.00 and 15.00, when the middle three slots overlap with the 9.07 and 11.07 boats. Arrive before the first coach slot or after the last one and you can have the pier close to yourself.

On my last visit there were people, but not much of a wait. Coaches can only come with an online reservation at CHF 50, and coach parking opens at 8.00.

Regular visitors converge on the same two pieces of advice. "Visit early in the morning to avoid queues" is the first. The second is about the other end of the day: "try to time your arrival to just before sunset. We managed to come here just before and the views were spectacular."

And crowding is not guaranteed. One review from a quieter day simply notes "there was no queue for the pier and it wasn't crowded". This is a stop where the hour matters far more than the season.

The practical timing plan looks like this:

• Before 08.00. No coaches yet. The first bus of the day gets you here before the slots open.

• 10.00 to 15.00. Peak. Coach slots plus the mid-morning and midday boats.

• After 17.00. The last coach slot ends at 19.00 and bus parking shuts at 18.30 in summer. Evening light on the lake, far fewer people.

What changes with the seasons and the weather?

The pier is open all year and the CHF 5 does not change, but almost everything around it does. The boats only run to the summer timetable from 23 May to 11 October 2026, and outside that window your only reliable approach is bus 103. The waterfall and mountain light that make the photograph work also shift completely between June and October.

Season by season:

• April and May. Boats restart on 3 April but the frequent summer timetable does not begin until 23 May. Quiet, cool, and the lake is at its most saturated green from the meltwater.

• June to August. Everything running, and the busiest coach traffic of the year. This is when the early start earns its keep.

• September. The best combination. Full boat service until 11 October, softer light, and visitor numbers falling from mid month.

• October. The summer boat timetable ends on 11 October, and from 5 to 23 October there is no coach parking in the village at all.

• November to March. A reduced boat service runs until 6 December. After that, bus 103 and a very quiet village.

On weather, the honest note is that this photograph needs flat water more than it needs sunshine. A grey, still morning gives you the mirror. A bright, windy afternoon gives you chop and glare. If you have flexibility in your week, pick the calm day rather than the sunny one.

How much walking does a visit to Iseltwald involve?

Very little, but it is not flat. From the Dorfplatz bus stop down to the water is a short walk of a few minutes on village lanes, and it is downhill. Which means it is uphill on the way back to the bus, with no alternative route. Arriving by boat removes the climb entirely.

What this means in practice:

• Arriving by boat: effectively step-free from the deck to the pier.

• Arriving by bus: a short descent on paved lanes, then the same climb back up. Fine for most people, tiring in heat, awkward with a large suitcase.

• Wheelchairs and pushchairs: the boat is the option that works. The lanes are narrow and sloping.

• Footwear: ordinary shoes. The pier planks are slippery when wet, and there is no railing on the lake side of parts of it.

Budget 45 minutes to an hour in the village. Any less and you have paid a bus fare to take one picture. Any more and you have exhausted a very small place.

What else is worth seeing in Iseltwald?

The village behind the pier, which nearly everyone skips. Iseltwald is a genuinely old lakeside settlement of stone houses and steep lanes, and it takes about twenty minutes to walk. There is also a bronze ibex statue on the shore that reviewers keep mentioning: "Don't miss the pretty ibex statue!"

Beyond that, the best thing to do here is leave in the right direction. Iseltwald sits between Interlaken and Brienz on the boat route, which makes it an excellent first stop rather than a destination.

Your questions about visiting the Iseltwald pier

Is the Iseltwald pier worth CHF 5?

It depends on what you want from it. The CHF 5 buys access onto the planks, not the view, and the view from the shore path beside the barrier is free and nearly identical. If the photograph standing on the pier is why you travelled, five francs is nothing against your flight. If you mainly want to see the place, walk the shore, skip the barrier and spend the money on the boat instead.

How do I get to Iseltwald from Interlaken?

Bus 103 from Interlaken Ost to Iseltwald, Dorfplatz takes 15 to 21 minutes with no changes, from CHF 3.20, with two departures an hour in summer including an express service. The BLS boat from Interlaken Ost takes about 40 to 45 minutes and lands you directly on the pier. Both are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. What time should I go to avoid the crowds?

Before 08.00 or after 17.00. Coach reservation slots start at 08.00 and the last one ends at 19.00, and the heaviest period sits between roughly 10.00 and 15.00 when the coaches overlap with the mid-morning and midday boats. Late afternoon light is also better for the photograph, and the water is often calmer early.

Can I park a car in Iseltwald?

Parking exists but is very limited. From 5 to 23 October 2026, while the Dorfplatz turnaround is resurfaced, there is no coach parking at all and groups can only arrive by public bus or boat. Coaches can never come without an advance online reservation costing CHF 50, and there is no drop-off zone. Overnight camping in the village is prohibited and checked.

Is there a toilet at the Iseltwald pier?

Yes, near the Iseltwald Dorf bus stop rather than on the pier, and it also has a barrier. Entry costs CHF 1, payable in half, one and two franc coins or by card. In 2024 the toilets alone brought the municipality about CHF 58,000. Bring coins, because a card transaction for one franc is a slow way to solve an urgent problem.

How long should I spend in Iseltwald?

Between 45 minutes and an hour. That covers the pier, the shore path, the village lanes and the ibex statue without rushing. Anything shorter and you have travelled here to take one photograph. Anything longer and you will run out of village, since almost everything worth seeing sits within a few hundred metres of the water.
