Day Trip to Brienz from Interlaken: Boat or Train

Update, 14 October 2026: the summer boat timetable ended on 11 October 2026. Since 12 October, boats run a reduced daily service until 6 December, leaving Interlaken Ost at 11.40 and 15.10 and Brienz at 13.20 and 16.20. None sail on Lake Brienz from 7 December 2026 to 25 March 2027. The Brienzer Rothorn railway closes after 25 October 2026. The train from Interlaken Ost runs all year.

Brienz sits 17 minutes from Interlaken Ost by train. That number is the reason most people get the day wrong.

Seventeen minutes sounds like a quick errand, so visitors arrive at eleven, walk the waterfront for forty minutes, decide there is nothing here, and go back. I see it in Brienz. Meanwhile the two things that make Brienz worth the trip, the steam railway up the Rothorn and the boat that gets you there along the water, both run to timetables that do not care what time you woke up.

In the summer timetable, the same journey by boat takes 1 hour 13 minutes. Same destination, four times the travel time, and on most days it is the better choice.

This is the practical version of a Brienz day: what leaves when, what each piece costs in 2026, what is already shut by the time you read this, and how much of the day you spend on your feet. Every price below comes from the operator's own site and carries the date it was checked.

How do you get from Interlaken to Brienz?

Two ways, both direct. Trains leave Interlaken Ost twice an hour and reach Brienz in 17 to 20 minutes, with no changes. Boats leave the pier opposite the station, a four minute walk away, five times a day in summer and reach Brienz in 1 hour 13 minutes, calling at Iseltwald and Giessbach on the way. Both are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

The train is operated by Zentralbahn along the north shore. Checked on sbb.ch on 23 August 2026, the pattern for a summer weekday runs like this: the PanoramaExpress towards Luzern leaves Interlaken Ost at :04 and arrives 17 minutes later, and the R70 regional towards Meiringen leaves at :33 and takes 20 minutes. An InterRegio fills in at :40 on some hours.

The boat is BLS. The 2026 summer timetable runs 23 May to 11 October, with five sailings each way, the first leaving Interlaken Ost at 9.07 and the last leaving Brienz at 17.40 to arrive back at 18.53. Those departure times are the whole constraint. In the summer timetable, boats leave Brienz at 10.40, 12.40, 13.40, 15.40 and 17.40, up to two hours apart. The number one mistake with this boat:

In summer, miss the 17.40 back and your only option is the train, which is fine, except your ticket may have been a boat day pass. Since 12 October 2026 the gap is longer: the reduced service leaves Brienz at 13.20 and 16.20, three hours apart, and nothing sails back after 16.20.

Should you take the boat or the train to Brienz?

Take the boat out and the train back. That is how I do it. The boat is the reason to go. It passes Iseltwald and Giessbach and gives you the lake from the middle, not from a window. The train is the reason you get home on time.

Doing it in that order costs nothing extra and removes the timetable stress from the end of the day.

One detail worth knowing before you pick a sailing. Between 23 May and 27 September 2026 the paddle steamer Lötschberg, built in 1914, runs Wednesday to Sunday, and a motor vessel covers Monday and Tuesday. From 28 September the motor vessel runs daily. If riding the steamer is part of why you booked the boat, check the day of the week before you check the time.

If you hold the Berner Oberland Pass, all scheduled Lake Brienz courses are free, steamer included, and you can upgrade to first class for the day for CHF 12, where BLS otherwise charges CHF 37 on Lake Brienz.

The Lötschberg also carries a play cabin for children aged four and over, which is a small thing that changes a 73 minute crossing with a five year old into something manageable.

How much does a day trip to Brienz cost in 2026?

What a Brienz day costs per adult depends on one decision: whether you go up the Rothorn. The train to the village and back is the cheap part of the day. Everything expensive in Brienz is optional, and everything free in Brienz is the part people remember.

Two pass notes that save real money. The Swiss Travel Pass includes the Swiss Museum Pass, so Ballenberg is free with it, and it gives 50 percent on the Rothorn. The Berner Oberland Pass goes the other way: the Rothorn is free, and Ballenberg is 25 percent off. A local guest card also gets 25 percent at Ballenberg.

What is there to do in Brienz itself?

Brienz village is a single long street between the railway and the water, and its craft is the reason to stop rather than pass through: working carving businesses and a woodcarving museum at CHF 8, free for children up to 16.

What decides whether you get any of it is the day of the week, because the museum and the Jobin workshop at Hauptstrasse 111 are shut on Monday and Tuesday. We wrote the village up on its own, hour by hour, in half a day in Brienz village.

When I eat in Brienz with guests, it is at the Bistro Jobin. It shares Hauptstrasse 111 with the museum and keeps its hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 2 May to 25 October 2026.

The Rothorn steam railway starts beside Brienz station and takes about an hour to climb to Rothorn Kulm.

Is the Brienzer Rothorn worth CHF 98?

It is worth it if you treat the train as the attraction rather than the transport. The Brienzer Rothorn Bahn is a steam rack railway that has been pushing carriages up the mountain since the nineteenth century, and it takes about an hour to climb from the lakeshore to Rothorn Kulm. Timoté Baily, one of our guides, rode it in 2026, and what stayed with him was the smell and the smoke in a tunnel.

Fun fact: The line was built in just 16 months by around 700 workers, most of them from Italy, and opened on 16 June 1892. In 1958 demolition was on the table, and it was the people of Brienz who mobilised to keep the steam trains running.

At CHF 98 return it is one of the most expensive short rides in the Bernese Oberland, and one of the few where I have seen people applaud at the top.

The 2026 season runs 6 June to 25 October. Departures from Brienz run from 7.36 to 16.36, and back down from Rothorn Kulm from 9.06 to 17.40. Three ways to make the price hurt less:

• Stop at Planalp instead of the summit. Return is CHF 66, and it is where most of the steam-and-scenery part of the ride happens.

• Bring a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass and pay CHF 49 return to the summit.

• Bring a Berner Oberland Pass and pay nothing.

Children aged 6 to 15 pay CHF 10 return to the summit, which is the single best value ticket in this article.

Add CHF 8 for a guaranteed seat if you are travelling on a July or August weekend. Trains sell out, and the alternative to a seat guarantee is watching one leave.

Is Ballenberg worth adding to the same day?

Only if you skip the Rothorn. Ballenberg is Switzerland's open air museum of historic buildings, spread over a site that takes three to four hours to walk properly. It opens 9 April to 1 November 2026, daily 10.00 to 17.00, and costs CHF 32 for adults, CHF 16 for children aged 6 to 16 and CHF 72 for a family. Checked on ballenberg.ch on 23 August 2026.

Trying to fit Ballenberg and the Rothorn into one day from Interlaken is the most common overreach I see. The Rothorn eats four hours including the ride and a look around the summit. Ballenberg eats another four if you do it honestly. Add 90 minutes of travel and you are looking at a ten hour day where you rushed both halves.

Pick one. If you have children between four and twelve, pick Ballenberg. If you have a clear morning and a camera, pick the Rothorn. If Ballenberg is your pick, I would pair it with Brienz or Giessbach on the same day.

Ballenberg sits at Museumsstrasse 100 in Hofstetten bei Brienz, a short bus ride from Brienz station rather than a walk from the boat pier. With a Swiss Travel Pass entry is free, and with a Berner Oberland Pass or a local guest card you get 25 percent off. Which entrance to start from and what to skip is in Ballenberg in half a day.

What is worth stopping for on the way?

Two stops, both on the boat, both worth breaking the crossing for. Iseltwald is the village with the wooden pier from the Korean drama Crash Landing on You, about 40 to 45 minutes out from Interlaken Ost. Giessbach is a waterfall that drops in stages into the lake, with an 1879 funicular climbing from the jetty to the old hotel. It is the stop I never skip on Lake Brienz.

Giessbach deserves its own set of numbers, mostly about the funicular, which costs CHF 14 return and is covered by no travel pass at all, not even the Swiss Travel Pass. The footpath up from the jetty is free and takes fifteen minutes. All of it, including the last car down and the last plate of food, is in the Giessbach funicular guide.

Iseltwald deserves its own set of warnings, mostly about the CHF 5 turnstile on the pier and the coach traffic. When should you go, and what is already closed?

The usable Brienz season is June to mid October, and it is set by the Rothorn railway rather than by the weather. The steam trains run 6 June to 25 October 2026. The summer boat timetable runs 23 May to 11 October.

Miss those windows and Brienz is still pretty, but it is a village with a lake rather than a day trip.

Month by month, this is what actually changes:

• April and May. Boats run from 3 April, Ballenberg opens 9 April, the woodcarving museum opens 2 May, and the Rothorn railway only reaches Planalp, from 9 May. Quiet, cheap, and half the reasons to come are missing.

• June to August. Everything open. The Rothorn sells out on weekends, the 9.07 boat is the busiest sailing of the day, and the pier at Iseltwald is loud from mid morning.

• September. The best month. Steamer still running to 27 September, museum still on summer hours to 30 September, and the crowds thin from the second week.

• October. The steamer stops on 27 September, the summer boat timetable ends 11 October, the museum drops to 13.30 to 17.00 on 1 October, the Rothorn closes 25 October, and Ballenberg closes 1 November. The whole thing unwinds in five weeks.

On weather, the rule that saves the most money is simple. If the summit is in cloud, do not spend CHF 98 to stand inside it. Check the railway's own summit view before you buy, then take Planalp at CHF 66 instead: it sits well below the summit, it is where most of the steam-and-scenery part of the ride happens, and low cloud rarely reaches it.

Insider tip: Pack a warm layer even on a hot lake day. The railway's own FAQ says to expect about 10 degrees less on the Brienzer Rothorn, at 2,350 metres, than down in Brienz, so plan your clothing for the top rather than for the shore.

How much walking does a Brienz day involve?

Less than almost any day trip in the region, if you plan it that way. From the boat pier to the far end of the Brienz waterfront is a flat 20 minute walk. The Rothorn railway carries you from the lakeshore to the summit station without a single step of climbing.

You can have a full day here in ordinary shoes.

Where it stops being flat:

• Rothorn Kulm summit. The station sits 106 metres of climbing below the actual top, on a path the railway calls manageable even for the less fit. Fine for most people, not fine in smooth soles or in wind. The mistake to avoid: staying at Kulm without going up to the summit.

• Giessbach. The path from the jetty up to the falls and the hotel climbs about 100 metres. Steps, spray, and slippery stone when wet. The funicular removes all of it for CHF 7 one way.

• Ballenberg. Deceptive. The site is large and rolling, and a proper visit is several kilometres on gravel and grass. Comfortable shoes matter more here than on the mountain.

For anyone with a pushchair or limited mobility: the boat, the train and the Brienz waterfront all work. The Giessbach funicular is not wheelchair accessible and takes pushchairs only when there is room. The Rothorn summit path does not work either.

Is Brienz worth a day trip from Interlaken?

Yes, if you go for the boat and the railway rather than for the village. Brienz village is small and honest, about twenty minutes of walking and a good woodcarving museum. What earns the day is the crossing of Lake Brienz, the stop at Giessbach and the steam climb up the Rothorn. Treat it as a transport day with three good stops and it is one of the best value trips from Interlaken. Treat it as a town to explore and you will be finished by lunchtime.

How long does it take to get from Interlaken to Brienz?

17 to 20 minutes by train from Interlaken Ost, with two departures an hour and no changes, or 1 hour 13 minutes by boat in the summer timetable; on the reduced service from 12 October to 6 December 2026 the boat takes 60 to 90 minutes. The PanoramaExpress towards Luzern is the 17 minute option and leaves at :04 past the hour. The R70 regional towards Meiringen takes 20 minutes and leaves at :33.
