Bönigen Historic House Trail: Free, 4 Min Away

Bönigen sits on Lake Brienz, just east of Interlaken Ost station. The bus takes four minutes. It leaves at five past and thirty five past, every half hour until about eight in the evening, then hourly (timetable checked on 8 October 2026).

The old centre sits two streets back from the water, easy to miss if you only come for the lake. It contains wooden houses that have stood on the same spot since 1549, carved, dated and inhabited, in a village core the Swiss federal inventory classes as of national importance.

In September 2025 Bönigen became the first village in the whole Bernese Oberland admitted to the association of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland.

What is the Historic House Trail in Bönigen?

A free, self guided walk through Bönigen's oldest quarter, past carved and painted wooden houses built between the 16th and 18th centuries. It takes about an hour at most, it is barrier free and suitable for pushchairs, and it ends at the village museum, the Alte Pinte, built in the 1770s. There is no ticket and no gate.

The route is marked on a village map you pick up at the tourist office, and it threads the narrow lanes behind the lakefront rather than the lakefront itself. That is the whole trick of Bönigen. The water is the obvious part and the village is two streets inland, so it is easy to come for the beach and leave without seeing it. When I walked the trail one summer morning, this is the detail I noticed:

Since 1549 the old core has kept buildings from every construction period, one beside the other, because no great fire ever destroyed it.

What you are looking at is not a museum street. People live in these houses. The carving is on working buildings, which is the difference between Bönigen and the Ballenberg open air museum, about an hour up the lake by bus and train.

How do you get to Bönigen from Interlaken?

By bus in four minutes, or by boat in eighteen. PostBus line 103 leaves Interlaken Ost at :05 and :35 past every hour and reaches Bönigen, Dorf in four to five minutes. In summer the Lake Brienz boat calls at Bönigen too. On foot it is a flat walk of roughly two and a half kilometres along the Aare.

The bus is the answer nine times out of ten. Four minutes, every half hour, and it puts you at the Dorf stop inside the old quarter rather than at the far end of the lakefront.

Insider tip: If you sleep in Interlaken, Matten, Unterseen, Bönigen or one of the other 11 guest card municipalities, your host hands you the Gästekarte Interlaken from the first night: it gives you free rides on local public transport within its validity area, plus 20% off the BLS day pass for Lakes Thun and Brienz.

The boat is the better arrival if you have the time. In the summer timetable, 23 May to 11 October 2026, sailings leave Interlaken Ost at 9.07, 11.07, 12.07, 14.07 and 16.07 and call at Bönigen eighteen minutes later. Coming back, boats stop at Bönigen at 11.35, 13.35, 14.35, 16.35 and 18.35, reaching Interlaken Ost at 11.53, 13.53, 14.53, 16.53 and 18.53.

Now the thing that happened this spring. On 1 April 2026 BLS announced that from the season start on 3 April the Lake Brienz boats would depart from Bönigen instead of Interlaken Ost: the lake was about 23 centimetres below its monthly average, too low for loaded boats to pass the Aare canal. Every boat ticket was valid on an extra bus from stop C at Interlaken Ost to Bönigen and back.

That diversion is over. In the autumn and winter timetable, from 12 October to 6 December 2026, the Lake Brienz boats leave from and return to Interlaken Ost again: on 16 October 2026, for example, the boat from Iseltwald at 14.07 calls at Bönigen at 14.28 and reaches Interlaken Ost at 14.50. Which houses are actually worth stopping at?

Three carry the trail. The Housihuus of 1757 was the village's first inn and lodged King Friedrich of Württemberg in 1808. Christi's Spycher of 1746 is a raised storehouse for cheese, with a carved frieze running under the roof. The Alte Pinte, built in the 1770s, is now the village museum and marks the end of the walk.

A Spycher is a storehouse raised off the ground on stone discs and short posts, so that mice cannot climb in, and it is where a family kept its cheese, its grain and its papers. When a village burned, the Spycher was often the only thing that survived. Bönigen never burned, so it kept both.

The carving is the reason the federal inventory cares. First the houses here were pure function, and then from the 16th century onwards a desire for decoration took over the facades, which is when the friezes, the painted inscriptions and the fan patterns arrive.

Fun fact: The Historical Dictionary of Switzerland counts about 100 woodcarvers working in Bönigen around 1900, in a village that had only 346 inhabitants in 1764. Hotel building had started in 1829, and the Bödelibahn railway reached Bönigen in 1874.

The houses are still standing because the village never burned, and because Switzerland decided to protect it. The old quarter of Bönigen is listed in the federal inventory of village sites of national importance, and in September 2025 the village joined the association of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland as the first member in the entire Bernese Oberland.

Bönigen kept every construction period standing side by side, from 1549 onwards, which is why the walk works: you can see the styles change without leaving one street.

The recognition is recent. On 19 September 2025, Plattform J reported that the municipality had joined Best Swiss Villages, alongside Ascona and Gruyères on the Swiss list and Vernazza and Riquewihr abroad. The mayor, Ueli Michel, was quoted: "Dass Bönigen die erste Gemeinde im Berner Oberland ist, erfüllt uns mit Stolz." That Bönigen is the first municipality in the Bernese Oberland fills us with pride.

One more thing the municipality is quietly proud of, and that matters more than the label. The entire lakeshore is in public ownership. No private jetty fences off the water. Bönigen has about 2,800 residents, by the municipality's own figure. It is a village people live in, not a set.

Do you need a guide, or can you walk it alone?

Alone is fine and free. Pick up the village map with the trail marked from the tourist office at Seestrasse 6, or run the route on your phone as a SmarTrail, which works in the browser without installing anything. Guided tours run on request through Bönigen-Iseltwald Tourismus on +41 33 822 29 58.

I walked it myself with a guided tour booked on request, which happened to fall on a Tuesday, on a summer morning in 2026. On my tour, it was mainly in English. The route takes an hour at most, by Interlaken Tourismus's own figure.

Three ways to do it, depending on what you want:

• The paper map, on your own. An hour, at your pace, and you can stop at the Spycher for as long as you like.

• The SmarTrail on your phone. The same route with stories and interactive stops at app.smartrails.ch/toi/historischer-haeuserweg-boenigen, no app to download.

• The guided tour. Booked on request through Bönigen-Iseltwald Tourismus, on the number above.

What else is there in Bönigen once the trail is done?

Two things worth an extra hour. The Alte Pinte village museum, at the end of the walk, shows a Bernese Oberland house furnished with everyday objects from 1730 to 1920, and admission is free. The Strandbad, at the mouth of the Lütschine, has a heated pool and lake access for CHF 6 an adult.

The museum first, because it is the point of the walk. The building dates from 1772 according to the trail description, or from around 1775 according to the municipality's museum page, and its back room was a small Pinte, a village drinking room, in the nineteenth century. Inside there is a rural kitchen, a bedroom, and three changing exhibitions a year. Until 25 October 2026, the special exhibition is Lebenslinien, Worte & Farben, a look at the world and work of the teacher Anna Schutter-Boller and of the artist and designer Jan Schutter.

The Strandbad is a different kind of stop and it is well run. CHF 6 for an adult, CHF 4 for a child aged 6 to 15, and from 17.00 an evening ticket at CHF 3.50 and CHF 2.50. The 2026 season closed on 13 September.

When should you go, and what closes when?

May to September for everything open, and any month at all for the houses. The trail itself is outdoors, free and never closes. What has a season is the museum, the pool and the boat. The Strandbad closed on 13 September 2026, the boat kept its summer timetable to 11 October and now runs an autumn timetable to 6 December, and the museum keeps afternoon hours to 25 October.

Month by month, what actually changes:

• April and May. The Strandbad opened on 16 May in 2026. Cold, empty lanes, and the low sun reaches deep into the old quarter. The best month for the carving, because there are no leaves in front of it, as I have seen there myself.

• June to August. Everything open. In 2026 the Strandbad ran 09.00 to 19.00 from 1 June to 9 August, then 09.00 to 18.00 to 13 September. The village fills in the afternoon and, as I have seen there, empties again after six.

• September. The boats keep the summer timetable to 11 October and the museum stays open to 25 October.

• October to March. The houses, the lanes and the lakeshore, and very little else. Until 6 December 2026, one boat a day each way still calls at Bönigen: out of Interlaken Ost at 11.40, arriving at 12.02, and back through Bönigen at 14.28. Bus 103 runs all year, which makes Bönigen the easiest winter walk near Interlaken that is not a mountain.

On weather, this is a rare Oberland outing that rain does not ruin. Painted timber and carved friezes read better under cloud than under hard midday sun, which flattens the relief. What you do want is dry footing on the cobbles and an hour when the lane is not in shadow. How much walking does the Bönigen house trail involve?

Very little, and that is its strength. The circuit takes an hour at most, it is flat, it stays on made surfaces, and the tourism office describes it as barrier free and suitable for pushchairs. There are toilets on the route. Anyone who can walk a slow kilometre can do the whole thing.

The honest breakdown:

• The trail alone. Under an hour, flat, cobbles and asphalt, benches on the way. Fine with a pushchair, fine with a wheelchair, fine for grandparents.

• Trail plus the museum. Add thirty to forty minutes. The museum has stairs.

• Trail plus the lakeshore. Add twenty minutes for the walk out to the pier and back, still flat.

• Walking there from Interlaken Ost. About two and a half kilometres each way along the Aare, flat the whole distance.

The one caution is the surface. These are old village lanes, not a promenade, and some of the paving is uneven where the houses meet the street. Flat soles rather than heels, and take the pushchair down the middle of the lane.

I drive past the turning for Bönigen most weeks and I know exactly how easy it is to keep going. The lake is on the other side, the mountains are behind you, and there is no reason to stop unless someone tells you what is two streets back from the water.
