What to Wear and Bring on a Swiss Farm Tour (Notes From Someone Who's Done It Dozens of Times)

I've done this tour with guests in sandals. In October rain. With a man who wore white linen trousers to an alpine farm.

Here's the actual list of what helps and what doesn't.

What Footwear Do I Need for the Farm Tour?

The path from Büffelboden to Alp Sigriswiler is not steep but it is uneven. It crosses meadows, passes a stream, and can be muddy after rain. No technical gear needed, which surprises most guests when they ask.

You do not need hiking boots. You do need closed-toe shoes with a sole that grips. Trail runners or light hiking shoes work well. Sandals, ballet flats, and dress shoes do not.

If it's been raining in the 24 hours before we go, expect the ground to be slippery near the stream crossing. Boots with ankle support help in those conditions, not mandatory, but you'll be glad you have them.

What Should I Wear at 1,400 Metres?

The farm sits at 1,400 metres. The walk starts from the car park at around 1,100m, so you gain about 300 metres of elevation on the way up. On a July morning at 8am departure, it might be 10 to 12°C on the alp even if Interlaken is already at 20°C. By the time we're having breakfast at 10am, the temperature climbs significantly.

What works: a light fleece or softshell layer you can tie around your waist once you're warm. Think comfortable layers you can add or remove in five minutes. What doesn't work: a heavy winter jacket you'll carry the entire time.

Jeans are fine in summer. In cooler months, hiking trousers are more comfortable.

What Happens if It Rains?

We run the tour in light rain. Light rain doesn't affect the experience: the farm is covered, breakfast is inside, and the hike is short enough that a waterproof jacket handles it fine.

We cancel in heavy rain or thunderstorm conditions. You'll get a WhatsApp message by 7am if that happens.

If the forecast shows any chance of rain, bring a waterproof jacket, not an umbrella. Hands-free is better on uneven ground. The most reliable forecast for the Bernese Oberland is MeteoSwiss, check the "Bernese Highlands" region the evening before.

What Should I Bring?

  • Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots

  • A fleece or softshell layer

  • A waterproof jacket if rain is possible

  • Your appetite, the breakfast is substantial

  • A small reusable bag if you want to buy cheese to take home (CHF 20/kg)

  • Phone charged, the light in Justistal valley in the morning is worth it

What Should I Leave Behind?

  • Large bags or suitcases (you're hiking with whatever you bring)

  • White or light-coloured clothing (farm environment)

  • Heavy perfume (it affects how you taste food, and the cows don't appreciate it either)

What Is Included in the CHF 139?

  • Round-trip transport from Interlaken

  • Full Swiss breakfast at the farm

  • All cheese tastings

  • Guided visit of the dairy and cellar

  • Price: CHF 139 per person, all in

The only optional extra: cheese to buy at CHF 20/kg. Bring cash, the farm doesn't take cards.

Where and When Do We Meet?

Interlaken West station, departure at 8h00 sharp. If you're staying in a hotel on Hauptstrasse, we can arrange a pickup closer to you, message us when you book.

Your Questions About the Farm Tour

What if I show up without the right shoes?

It happens. If your footwear is genuinely unsuitable for the trail condition that day, I'll let you know before we start. The trail is short, and in dry conditions most people manage with light sneakers. I'd rather you come prepared.

Can I wear regular sneakers on the farm tour?

Regular trainers work fine on a dry day. The trail from the car park to Alp Sigriswiler is 20 to 25 minutes, mostly on grass and packed earth. If it rained in the previous 24 hours, a grippier sole makes a real difference near the stream crossing. My honest answer: clean trainers in July, no problem. The same shoes in October mud, slip risk. If you have walking shoes, bring those. If all you have is city trainers, come anyway and take it slow. Nobody has ever had to turn back.

Do I need to bring water?

You don't need to carry water for the walk, it's 20 to 25 minutes and mostly easy. Water and hot drinks are included at the farm breakfast. If you tend to need water early in the morning, bring a small bottle from Interlaken. There is a stream on the trail, but it's not drinking water.

Do I need cash for the tour itself?

The tour (CHF 139) can be paid by card. The cheese you buy at the farm is cash only, CHF 20/kg. Daniela doesn't have a card reader. You can withdraw cash at the Migros near Interlaken West station (Rugenparkstrasse 1) if you need some before we go.

Is there a toilet at the farm?

Yes. Facilities are available at the farmhouse.

Chästeilet Justistal 2026: Cheese by Lottery

Every September the Justistal divides a whole summer of cheese by drawing wooden tokens from a sack. It is free, it is not a show, and there is no bus into the valley. Here is the 2026 date, the transport reality, and the part nobody has published in English yet.
